Inpatient rehabilitation services are available through Turning Point Rehabilitation Center at St. Mary Medical Center to people who need to learn skills to adapt to physical or cognitive disabilities.
Appropriate candidates for admission to the rehabilitation unit are people who have had a recent illness, injury, or disease resulting in a loss of function. The disability is severe enough that they can no longer care for themselves with their present resources or help. They also need close medical supervision by a physician, 24-hour-a-day rehabilitation nursing care, and services from two of the three following therapies: physical therapy, occupational therapy, and/or speech therapy.
The intensity of services provided is determined by the individual needs of the person served. The services will include no less than three hours per day or a minimum of 15 hours per week in two or more types of therapy.
What if I’m not ready for rehabilitation right now?
Patients and families may be disappointed if inpatient rehabilitation isn’t recommended right away. A person who is too cognitively or physically impaired may require some recovery time in a skilled nursing facility before they can benefit from rehabilitation services.
It is important to remember inpatient rehabilitation can be considered at a time when the patient can tolerate more intensive therapies. People often recover enough to be admitted to rehabilitation at a later date. If you have questions or concerns whether you or are loved one are ready for rehabilitation, the staff will be happy to discuss this with you.
