Physician Careers

St. Mary Medical Center is a 141-bed not-for-profit hospital that serves a large rural region of Southeastern Washington and Northeastern Oregon.  In 2007 it was named as one of the 100 top hospitals in the United States based on its patient care, patient safety and organizational excellence. It was also named one of the 100 top hospitals in the nation for maintaining low health care prices for patients, while also maintaining financial strength. Only 16 hospitals in the United States received both of these top 100 designations in a single year. (Both national top 100 designations were granted in 2007, and based on data from 2006.)

The hospital invests strongly in its medical staff, technology and facility. In recent years it has constructed a new Emergency Department, Cancer Center, Outpatient Procedure Center and Sleep Lab. It also has significantly expanded Imaging. It currently is planning the next phase of renovations and expansion, which will include the OR.

Walla Walla, known as one of the most beautiful historic cities in Washington State, serves as the financial, civic, cultural and medical center of Southeastern Washington and Northeastern Oregon.

In 2006, Money Magazine selected it as one of the best places to retire in the nation, based on its “top-notch health care, loads of culture, lots of green space and low taxes.” Traffic is light, and commutes are short – usually 15 minutes or less. Nearly every type of outdoor activity is close-at-hand, including hiking, hunting, camping, boating, fishing, skiing, golfing, biking and equestrian pursuits. The city also boasts outstanding public schools, several private schools, and three colleges, including Whitman College, which is rated as one of the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the nation.

Walla Walla County is a destination for wine connoisseurs, with acres of vineyards and more than 100 wineries. Many are award-winning, including several that have produced wines rated by Wine Spectator as among the best in the world.
