Diabetes education at Providence St Mary Medical Center aims to empower individuals to achieve and maintain good health and to prevent the complications that may develop from diabetes by providing knowledge and skills needed for successful management.
What we believe
At Providence St Mary Medical center, we believe that individual teaching along with group classes and follow up achieves the best results. In fact, our Diabetes Education Program is recognized by the American Diabetes Association and meets the national standards of diabetes management.
Our instructors
Our nurse educators provide the information and skills you need to manage your diabetes effectively. Topics discussed by the diabetes nurse educator include defining diabetes, being active, healthy eating, monitoring, taking medications, problem solving, reducing risks and healthy coping. The nurse diabetes educator will help you make a plan that includes goals you select on the topics discussed.
Our dietitians work with you to develop an individual meal plan based on your special needs and tastes. Information discussed includes types of foods, what is a carbohydrate, how carbohydrates affect, blood sugar, how to read food labels, healthy food choices, carbohydrate counting and awareness of a variety of foods that contribute to a your specific meal plan.
What we offer
All education is provided in Spanish or English for all age groups. Education is available for those with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes
